Lee Mortimer is one of the hottest DJ’s at the moment with his unique take on dirty house music, a label which accurately describes this bass heavy sound but as Lee is keen to point out ‘anything sleazy, electronic and above all else, BIG(!) will make it into my sets!’ His remixes have become legendary and he has re-jigged tracks such as ‘Parlez Vous Francais?’ by Art Vs Science and the seminal ‘Closer Than Close’ by Rosie Gaines vs Sam Young as well as collaborations with Laidback Luke, Black Noise, DJ Flipside and the Streetlife DJ’s. It is not only electronic music that he sprinkles gold dust over he has also remixed bands such as Bombay Bicycle Club and The Futureheads as well as chopping up the chart house of Cherri Moon’s ‘One More Crazy Summer’ into something far heavier.
Lee is also head honcho of his own label Wearhouse music which has produced tons of fantastic EP’s since it began including the amazing Champion Sound EP as well as hot tracks from Kill Light such as ‘In the Dancehall’ and ‘Light It’ by Jay Robinson. Other signings include Slap In The Bass with the much remixed ‘Surko’ and immense tuneage from the likes of Youx and Claude Von Stroke favourite Eats Everything. With cutting edge releases coming out all the time Wearhouse music has become one of the sharpest record companies around and has produced four volumes of the excellent Fresh Attire compilations, the most recent of which features mixes of the club smash ‘Do It’. Wearhouse club nights in London have also become something of a talking point with the latest beatfest ‘Warehouse Music: All Night Long’ taking place at Nest in Dalston.
Lee Mortimer is the complete package. He remixes; produces and his DJ skills are unbeatable. He regularly plays around the globe and his monster sets are something to behold. He has played at Bestival and Glasto and is a regular feature on the London club scene with appearances at The Rhythm Factory, Hoxton Pony and Ministry of Sound to name but a few. It all falls into place when watching him play out as the crowd throbs in unison as each new bassline warps into another floor shaking classic.
Last year Mortimer teamed up with reggae soundsystem legends Daddy Colonel & Papa Levi for the infectious ‘Fi Come Dance’ which was accompanied by a great promo vid which got plenty of hits on YouTube. Lee just lives for music and you can hear this love in everything he touches from full on party tunes (‘Superman’ with Foamo) to 80’s electro revamps (check out the awesome remix of Visage – ‘Fade To Grey’) and crazy originals (‘From A Great Height’ on Carioca Records). 2011 has seen Mortimer mix and release ‘Wearhouse Music All Night’ a stirling collection of house music’s warped moments to great acclaim with solid reviews in and on Mixmag / Datatransmission / IDJ to name a few. So far this year, Lee has had guest mixes on Radio 1 / Kiss FM / Rinse FM plus also being asked to cover DJ Zinc’s weekly Rinse FM show, add the release of the massive Bass CTRL EP in May this year and you can see why Lee continues to grab the attention of the world’s finest DJs both old and new and cements his reliable reputation as one the best electronic producers in the UK.
With talent to spare Lee has proved there are many strings to his low slung bass, dipping his fingers into a variety of genres including Dubstep, Electro and Tropical House. As his already enormous fanbase keeps growing, so does his stature in the fruitful but fractured dance music scene and whenever Lee Mortimer’s name appears on a record, club poster or production credit you are guaranteed quality every time.
